The Kentucky Theatre Association’s commitment to theatre education goes beyond its flagship program, the dynamic One Act Play Festival for High Schools, which happens each year as part of the KTA conference.

KTA has committed to providing professional development opportunities to Kentucky’s teachers of theatre since the early 1990’s.  Each year, at its annual conference, KTA provides a full day of professional development for teachers at all grade levels. Teachers receive up to six hours of professional development credit.

The 2008 KTA/KAAE Professional Development Day will be on Saturday, November 8 at the University of Kentucky, Lexington. KTA’s Professional Development day offers opportunities for elementary, middle, and high school teachers to experience a hands-on approach to drama in the classroom.  It is an experiential approach to meeting the needs of the drama core-content at all levels.

Recognizing that many teachers are assigned to the drama classroom whether or not they have experience in the art form, the Professional Development Day always offers an Elements of Drama overview.

Look for sessions that focus on:
  • Key concepts of drama
  • Specific drama genres
  • Periods and Styles
  • Connections to other art forms
  • Cross-curricular connections

Sessions conducted by the Kentucky Department of Education, Kentucky Educational Television, the Kentucky Arts Council, and other statewide organizations provide a valuable “big picture.”

The KTA/KAAE Professional Development Day frequently includes a strand of sessions specifically focused on dance core content.

Since 2004, the Professional Development Day has been a collaboration between KTA and the Kentucky Alliance for Arts Education, which manages this event.  Teachers attending the
Professional Development day receive a year’s membership in both KTA and KAAE—a benefit designed to keep teachers connected with drama content, trends, and issues throughout the Commonwealth.

Teacher registration for the 2008 Professional Development Day will begin in the fall.  Check back here for the registration form and details of this year’s programming.

KTA, as part of the Southeastern Theatre Conference is also an active participant in SETC’s annual K-12 Teacher Institute.  In 2009, this Institute will be in its fourth year and will be held in Birmingham, AL as part of the annual SETC Conference. Find out more about attending this regional professional development opportunity by clicking here.

KTA has also begun working in conjunction with AATE, the American Association of Theatre and Education (a national organization that helps manage the SETC Institute).  The AATE national conference will be held in Atlanta from July 22-28.  Click here for more
