Submission Period Ends: August 15th, 2009.
APPLICATION FORM
(need free Adobe Acrobat 7 or later to save)
Rules and Regulations
- Plays must be written by either a current or past Kentucky residents. Former residents should have been residents of KY for at least 3 years. There are no age or previous experience prerequisites.
- The contest is free to all! As this program is a new way of providing value to KTA members, though, KTA implores each writer to consider joining KTA—as KTA cannot continue to promote and advocate theatre in Kentucky without a deep base. Individual memberships are only $20; students only $10. Join online at theatreky.org.
- Full-length plays are preferred. Plays should be no longer than 120 pages.
- Plays should be formatted in industry standard format (see Dramatist Guild for more information), and electronic submissions should be in either PDF or MS Word formats.
- To be considered, plays should have received no previous full production. Previous staged readings are acceptable (and, incidentally, encouraged).
- Plays can be comedies, dramas, farces, or anything in between. For the 2009 competition, no musicals will be accepted. In addition, please do not submit screenplays or teleplays, as neither will be considered.
- Submit your best! Obvious first drafts (typos, spelling errors) will score poorly.
- All plays MUST be submitted with a completed application form, a one-page summary of the play, and an author biography of no more than one page. Incomplete applications will not be considered.
- Electronic submissions are accepted, and—in an effort to be as green as possible in the Bluegrass—encouraged. Electronic submissions should be sent to doug.schutte@theatreky.org.
- The play itself should contain no reference to the individual writer. A standard cover page may be submitted with the work, but please note that it will be removed prior to being duplicated for judges. PLEASE do not list the author’s name in the header and footer with the page number. The page number and title of play will suffice.
- If submitting a hard copy of the script, include a SASE (for the full postage) if you wish your play returned.
The Adjudication Process:
6 semi-finalists will be announced September 15th, 2009. The KTA Board reading committee will read, judge, and select the 6 semi-finalists. Each play will have a minimum of 2 readers, with a 3rd reader added if the first two scores are disparate.
The 6 semi-finalists will then be sent to 3 independent New Play Festival Judges, who will score the plays. KTA will use an aggregate scoring system to discern the 3 finalists.
3 finalists will be announced October 15th, 2009. Finalists will be invited to attend the 2009 conference at Morehead State University, with a selected stage reading presented for each finalist.
The winning play will be announced at the KTA Fall Conference Awards Ceremony Saturday, November 14th, 2009.
The winning playwright will receive a $250 cash prize, award plaque, and tremendous publicity.
All finalists will be offered a free hotel night in Morehead, as well as free registration to the conference. In addition, KTA will promote all 3 works within its network of member theatres throughout the state via the website and newsletter.
Questions and Inquiries should be sent to KTA Executive Director Doug Schutte at doug.schutte@theatreky.org. |
